Question:
I've decided to purchase a used boat. I'm looking for advice on how best to
go about it. I'm not even sure what style I want. I figure I'll start by
buying some boat magazines and start reading them. I want to spend $5000 or
less. I'll do some fishing, pull a water skier/tuber, I would use it in
lakes and the Charles river (I live in Massachusettes) maby in the ocean,
close to shore and in some of the rivers down the Cape like Bass river.
Aluminum, fiberglass, wood ????? I would think aluminum is the lightest and
the easiest to pull. (I may have to get something to pull whatever boat I
get also) Like I said I'm a first time buyer so amny advice would be
apreciated.
Answer:
Unfortunately, you'll find little advise on boats less than $5000 in boat
magazines. You should have no problem finding something in your price range
though. Aluminum is generally lighter than fiberglass and withstands abuse
better. Fiberglass probably is probably better for salt water. You should
be able to tow a 16-17 footer with a 70-115HP outboard with a standard size
car such as a Taurus or Camry. For towability with a car and possible
saltwater use I'd stay away from I/Os. I'll even risk flames a say avoid
Force OBs and 3 cylinder Mercs.
