Question:
Does anyone out there know of a difinitive resource of information in
which I can look up the rigging differences between the different types
of sail rigging, such as, schooner, sloop, ketch, dreadnought, cruiser,
clipper, etc. And the advantages of each?
Answer:
Just about any sailing book at the library will go over popular rig
types. The majority of sailboats today are sloops, so it's not real
important to getting into sailing as a result. It's mch more important
to learn basic sail controls and their role, and a few knots. Again, in
any text. Any of the books by Steve and Doris Colgate are good
introductions, and US Sailing/American Red Cross has "Learn to Sail
Right" The USSA www site has links to community sailing programs, and
there are also commercial learn-to-sail programs that do a great job. Go
to your library first, sailing books don't go out of date very fast.
