Question:
I am looking for a good quality used boat ranging from 28' - 32'. I will be
doing light sailing in northern Georgia. I looking for some recommendation
on what to look for and recommendations on quality boat models. I'd like a
newer model, but I'm open. My wife likes wooden, while I like woodworking, I
am concerned about a lot of work on a Morgan sail boat (even more then a wooden
power?). I have about a 30,000 budget, I am mostly interested in a quality
boat, easy sailing and room for overnight stays.
Answer:
-If you really want a quality WOODEN boat, get a Hinckley. You may have to
spend a little more than 30k(transportation costs) but I don't think you'll
find much better than that. Try http://www.soundingspub.com/ and use their
search engine.
-As a former owner of a classic stunningly beautiful wooden boat I can
tell you that the qualities of wood are excellent should you have the
time (or finances) to maintain her properly. Running short on the time
end of things I sold her in excellent shape to a friend. I purchased a
glass boat as a replacement ( Cape Dory 30 Ketch) and have found that on
the nice days I am sailing rather than laying on a coat of varnish or
feeling guilty for letting it go. There are a lot of quality boats built
in the late 60s and 70s with the classic lines that were once built of
wood. Spend the time to check out some of these Classic Production hulls.
-Consider entering the Win "Passport" Photo contest. It's
a fundraiser for The American Cancer Society. We're giving
the Morgan 38 "Passport" to the winner.
