Question:
Do It Yourself Boat Engine Repair?
Just a heads up for all you do-it-yourself types out there. Chilton, the people
who made do-it-yourself automotive manuals famous, now offers marine engine
manuals (under the Seloc brand name).
Answer:
- Better yet, buy the factory manual for the brand you're fixing. It's complete and accurate for the model you own, costs the same, and shows part numbers of the
special tools you need (if required).
- you are absolutely right about the manuals. Who knows better than the
manufacturer how to fix their products.
- You need both if you are not an experienced mechanic.
The factory manuals assume you know a LOT that the
Chilton's and the like explain in detail. I know this
from personal experience with car, motorcycle, small
utility motor and outboard manuals. A pro mechanic
would likely find the "obvious" material in Chilton's
to be in the way of the needed material. The Chilton's
may also suggest workarounds for specialized tools which
the home mechanic may not have. As you say, the factory
manual will be specific and accurate (usually) for the
particular model you have.
